About Glo.be

Glo.be is an information resource from the Belgian Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. It reports on the activities carried out abroad by Belgium to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (inset). In addition, it provides background information on the various themes related to the SDGs. Glo.be takes a broader approach than just the activities of the Belgian Development Cooperation (inset), and also highlights other departments of the FPS Foreign Affairs in the areas of human rights, climate, peace, security and similar issues.

The website is fully in line with the universal UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, which was adopted at the end of September 2015 by the international community. We also group the themes around the 5 pillars of the SDGs: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership (see inset SDGs).

History

The magazine of the Belgian Development Cooperation was launched in 1975, under the name Dimensie 3. This journal reported on Belgian activities in the area of development cooperation. In addition, it provided background information on the problems and challenges linked to North-South relations. In 2014, Dimensie 3 was rebranded as Glo.be.

In 2017, Glo.be went online. The paper magazine has made way for an information website which continues to provide information and raise awareness on the issues linked to the Belgian Development Cooperation, in the broader sense. Emphasis is placed on the efforts made by Belgium to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) abroad.

The Belgian Development Cooperation

The Belgian Development Cooperation works towards a just, equitable and sustainable world where everyone can live in peace, security and freedom, without poverty. The partners financed by the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD) of the FPS Foreign Affairs are the Belgian Development Agency (Enabel) which is primarily responsible for governmental cooperation, the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO), as well as non-governmental actors (NGOs, universities, scientific institutions, etc.) and multilateral actors (UN agencies, EU, World Bank, etc.). They implement Belgian policy in the area of development cooperation.

Development cooperation and foreign policy are increasingly convergent. The SDGs have accelerated this process. As such, they have put a universal agenda for sustainable development at the fore, which applies to all countries. The conventional distinction between rich countries of the North and poor countries of the South no longer applies. 'International cooperation' is the term which is more generally used.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals intended to make the world a more sustainable place by 2030, with more equality and prosperity. All 193 Member States of the United Nations have committed to achieving the SDGs.

The first 15 goals correspond with the three pillars of sustainable development: people (social), planet (ecological) and prosperity (economic). The last two goals create the indispensable framework: peace (SDG16 - peace and security) and partnership (SDG17).

On the Glo.be site, this is:

People (concern for each other)

1. No Poverty 3. Good health and well-being 4. Quality education 5. Gender Equality 11. Sustainable cities and communities

Planet (care for the environment)

6. Clean water and sanitation 7. Affordable and clean energy 13. Climate action 14. Life below water 15. Life on land

Prosperity (produce and share)

2. Zero hunger 8. Decent work and economic growth 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure SDG10 12. Responsible consumption and production

Peace

16. Peace, justice and strong institutions

Partnership

17. Partnerships for the goals
