Global Citizen Festival : €43 million for women's rights
The 2018 edition of the Global Citizen Festival, an international charity concert, was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 2, 2018. On this occasion, Alexander De Croo, minister for Development Cooperation, announced a Belgian investment of 43 million euros for women's rights in the coming years.
The 2018 edition of the Global Citizen Festival, entitled "Mandela 100", commemoratds the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth. In the spotlight: Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and... Alexander De Croo. Our minister for Development Cooperation took the opportunity to advocate for sexual and reproductive rights. His message was well received: "We cannot leave girls or women around the world to their fate, or leave them behind. More than 200 million women are now at risk because they do not have access to contraception." This intervention wa a continuation of the #SheIsEqual campaign and the "She Decides" movement.
She Decides in response to Trump
She Decides is an initiative of countries and organizations working together to ensure that aid organizations in developing countries can continue their work on family planning and women's rights. They have had their sources of funding from the US administration removed because of their abortion-related activity.
43 million euros
In front of an audience of more than 60,000 people, the Minister detailed the Belgian efforts: "12.4 million euros will go to the UN Population Fun ( UNFPA) and UNICEF to support their fight against child marriage and for better access to contraception. And in its bilateral cooperation programmes for the next six years, Belgium will promote sexual and reproductive rights and family planning. These programmes will mobilise €30.5 million”.
