The Belgian Embassy in Beirut supports the city’s efforts to make the environment more liveable.

Lebanon suffered the last years from a severe waste crisis. Still, the country deals with heavy air contamination and pollution at sea and on land. Several companies, non-governmental organizations and local organizations daily attempt to change the mentality and to make the country cleaner and greener.

The Belgian embassy in Beirut joins this initiative. A young, local company, Recycle Beirut, picks up pre-sorted waste, packages it and sends it to recycling installations elsewhere in Lebanon. Recycle Beirut employs mainly Syrian refugees for this. It wants to give them a decent wage and to serve at the same time a higher goal, namely environment protection. The project contributes to a more pleasant and healthy working and living environment.
